Hi Laurent,
it is NOT just an MBase11 with CV/Gate added but a complete new design from scratch with new (and much more powerful) CPU, new CV control and complete new software development. It has even prepared USB on board, the inter-D digital bus, Midi. The circuits are very different to the MBase11.
It's made in Germany and it's much more expensive in production than MBase11 (about the double). It has 2 PCBs, more mechanics and more assembly, believe it or not. We produce them in smaller quantities than the other small boxes.
To my experiences, the new module sounds more phat than the MBase11 with it's 9V small power supply.
The list(!) price for MBase11 is 249,- , for ModBase09 399,- which is a fair deal I think - not the double. Look at the prices of other module makers (Cwejman, mutable instruments a.s.o.) and you will find that this is still a fair price relation of what the module costs and what it can do. Which modules are real analog and storeable at the same time and CV-controllable? NOT that many I think.
If you just want to make "boom", get an MBase11.
If you want to have a eurorack synth module that can do much more, get a ModBase09.
They are really more expensive, the jacks, potentiometers and the more sophisticated electronics make it more expensive.
We had a similar effect 15 years back with the AirBase99 - everybody felt that this must be much cheaper in production than the XBase09 because its just a 19" rack unit and has not the knobs - but in fact it was not because the case was double the cost for instance, and the electronics was much more expensive. In the end, we sold them at lower price than XBase09 but had the same cost and we sold less of them. That makes no sense at all! As a business we have to make a certain profit or we can close the doors. None will be saving me if I make a wrong product decision as they recently saved the banks with public moneys...
I just looked what the Cjewman bass drum lead module costs - 600EUR retail! And nothing is storeable with it, ok it may sound different and very good too, but I don't think that the jomox kick drum needs to hide behind it.
Thanks for liking the module!
Best Wishes,
Jürgen Michaelis
